Childs’s riveting new book is a ghost story — an intense, impassioned investigation into the nature of the past and the things we leave behind. The result is a brilliant book about man and nature, remnants and memory, a dashing tale of crime and detection.

May 19: Playground, by Richard Powers, F, 2024
Set in the world’s largest ocean, this awe-filled book explores that last wild place we have yet to colonize in a still-unfolding oceanic game, and interweaves beautiful writing, rich characterization, profound themes of technology and the environment, and a deep exploration of our shared humanity .

June 16: Lives of Girls and Women, by Alice Monroe, F, 1971,
Rural Ontario, 1940s. Del Jordan lives out at the end of the Flats Road on her father’s fox farm, where her most frequent companions are an eccentric bachelor family friend and her rough younger brother. When she begins spending more time in town, she is surrounded by women–her mother, an agnostic, opinionated woman who sells encyclopedias to local farmers; her mother’s boarder, the lusty Fern Dogherty; and her best friend, Naomi, with whom she shares the frustrations and unbridled glee of adolescence.
